This project aims to improve the overall health and wellbeing of people in Kashare by addressing both water supply and sanitation.
The challenge: Kashare faces a severe water scarcity issue. Piped water and boreholes are scarce. Rainwater harvesting, typically from runoff of roofs, is hindered by the high cost of tanks. That means many residents, particularly children, collect water from distant and often contaminated ponds.
This time-consuming and risky practice, exacerbated during dry months, leads to waterborne illnesses and children missing school. Inadequate sanitation facilities, including open defecation, also pose significant health and safety risks, especially for girls.
The solution: To address these challenges, our project has implemented the following:
- Rainwater harvesting: Construction of 44 rainwater tanks, each with a capacity of 7,000 litres, provides reliable access to clean water for numerous households during rainy seasons.
- Domestic sanitation: Building 20 domestic latrines has significantly enhanced sanitation conditions for families.
- School sanitation: Construction of toilet blocks with cubicles and changing facilities in 12 primary schools promotes menstrual hygiene and encourages girls’ attendance.
Benefits of the project:
- Improved access to water: Reduces the need to walk long distances for water, preventing potential back and shoulder injuries.
- Better facilities: Renovation or construction of latrines with lockable doors at 12 schools.
- Better health: Promotes better hygiene and reduces the risk of waterborne diseases.
- Increased productivity: Allows people to spend more time on their farms and businesses, and children more time for school and homework.
Your support will help us continue plans to improve water supply and sanitation in 2025 and 2026.
